Jeremy walked into the caf้e. He walked up to Uniqueand grabbed her arm.“Come with me,” he said pulling her along with him.“Where are we going?” Unique asked pulling away fromhim. “I’m up next, can’t this wait?”“No,” Jeremy said turning and looking at her.“Yes it can,” she said and sat down in a chair. “Ihave to recite my poem tonight because they asked, nothey begged me to. So you are just gonna have towait.”“Fine,” Jeremy said and stormed out. The host,Ray’Chaun, came up to the mic.“Next up we have Nikki Stevens,” he said. She smiledat him as she walked up to the stage. He had asked herout for dinner earlier and she accepted. She got up tothe mic.“Hey,” she said into the mic after everyone stoppedclapping. “What I’m going to recite for you tonight isa poem that comes from deep inside. This relates to mein every way, so I hope you feel it.” She looked outat the crowd and saw Jeremy at the counter. She closedher eyes.“My first love, the one I gave my all and more. Iremember our first kiss in the cafeteria door,” shelet out a little laugh, her words came slowly andclearly. “You blew my mind at first, pleasing me inevery possible way, but little did I know my blueclouds would soon turn gray. The phone calls came to astop, and so did all of the roses. You remember? Iremember. You quit whispering you loved me and beganyelling how much you hated me. You remember? Iremember. The soft touch of your fingers slowlysliding down my back became the ferocious slaps andpunches that always threw me to the ground. I cried. Now I know you remember that. You didn’t care, figuredI’d end up back with you anyway. I did and you tookpride with a grin ear to ear wide. In front of friendsyou’d pretend, then once we were alone you’d beat meuntil I felt my life would end. Do you remember that?I do, I’m scarred with the memories, the nightmares. The sleepless nights wishing my life would end just soI wont have to see what you’ve done to me. But guesswhat, boo, it’s over, and I’m for real this time.
Because I can’t waste my life being stuck by yourside. Naw, that aint happenin, but before I let go ofyou and move on, I would like to say I love you, butnow I’m gone.” She opened her eyes. “Thank you.” Shewalked off the stage. Everyone was quiet then theystood up and began clapping. Ray’Chaun introduced thenext person then ran over toward her.“Who was that about?” he asked sitting her down in achair.“Jeremy,” she said leaning back and sipping hisSprite.“He did that?” he asked leaning up close to her.“Yup,” Unique said. “Wait til tonight, though. If Isee him, he’s gonna get me good.”“Come to my place,” Ray’Chaun said taking her hand.“Nah,” she said. “I’ll just go home. Hey, thanksthough. I gotta run,” she said standing up.“Be careful,” she heard him say after her.“Okay,” she said and walked out the door dismissingwhat he said. Thoughts filled her head about what sheknew might happen as she walked out to her mother’scar, which she had borrowed for the night, and drovehome. Once there, she got out and ran up to the porch.“Where the hell you think you goin?” she heard Jeremysay and he pulled her back by her hair.“Ow owwww, let go, Jay. JAY STOP!” she screamed.“Who was it about?” Jeremy asked as he pulled heracross the street to his house. He opened his door andpushed her in.“Who was what about?” she asked stumbling inside. Heslapped her and she stumbled back against the wall. “You know what the hell I’m talking about, ho!” hesaid coming closer to her. She looked at him. “Now whowas it about?”“Nobody,” she answered lowering her head. He slappedher and she threw her hands to her face. Her nose wasbleeding and she could taste blood in her mouth.“Who the fuck you foolin? You said that it related TOYOU! DON’T YOU REMEMBER?” he yelled. She backed upinto the corner. She kneeled down and put her face inher knees and started crying. He stood there for aminute.“Ho, don’t start cryin and shit now, shit. And when I find you,I’mma beat yo ass, then after I beat yo ass I’m gonkill you, and that’s a promise” he said in her ear.“But I don’t want you,” she said in a low whisper andhit him in the face again. She noticed it didn’t phasehim and he looked at her.“Bitch,” he said wiping the blood from his mouth. Hestood up and pulled her up with him. He sat there fora minute and then she felt his fist smash into herface. She felt her braces click and she pushed themout of her mouth and watched them as they hit thefloor.“You a nasty bitch too,” she heard him say and thenfell to the floor. He bent over her.“Don’t touch me,” she said. He pushed her head and shekicked him in the balls. He fell to the floor and sheran out of the house. She ran up to her porch andopened the door. Her mother, Charlene, was standing inthe kitchen, and her sister was right in front of thedoor.
